About David Walsh-Little

A Career Built on Defense

David Walsh-Little started Walsh-Little Law to provide high-quality legal representation to people charged with crimes in Maryland's state and federal courts. His career has been built entirely on the defense side of the courtroom, from his first position as a public defender in the Bronx to over a decade representing defendants in Maryland and four-plus years as an Assistant Federal Public Defender.

Every case David handles is shaped by that experience: thousands of hours in courtrooms, hundreds of clients represented, and a deep understanding of how prosecutors build cases, where investigations go wrong, and how the legal system actually works for the people who need it most.

Education

David graduated from Fordham University in New York City and from Columbia University School of Law, also in New York. During law school, he interned for William M. Kunstler, one of the most prominent and unconventional civil rights lawyers in American history.

Kunstler was the attorney who defended the Chicago Seven, represented members of the American Indian Movement at the Wounded Knee trials, took on cases that most lawyers would not touch, and spent his career arguing that everyone charged with a crime deserves a genuine, committed defense, regardless of what they are accused of. Working alongside him taught David something that has shaped his practice ever since: that the quality of your defense should not depend on who you are or what you are charged with.

Early Career: Legal Aid and the Sowebo Center for Justice

David's first position as an attorney was with the Legal Aid Society in the Bronx, representing indigent criminal defendants in New York's courts. It was frontline defense work: high-volume, serious cases, clients with no other options.

After moving to Maryland, David founded and ran the Sowebo Center for Justice, a grassroots law office serving the Southwest Baltimore community. The Sowebo neighborhood sits in the heart of Baltimore City, and the Center was built around the belief that people in under-resourced communities deserve access to skilled legal representation, not just representation by volume.

Maryland Office of the Public Defender

David spent over a decade with the Maryland Office of the Public Defender, representing defendants in state court throughout that time. For three of those years, he served as the Chief of the Felony Trial Division in the Baltimore City Office.

As Chief of the Felony Trial Division, David was responsible for the most serious criminal cases handled by the Public Defender in Baltimore City: murders, attempted murders, armed robberies, sexual assaults, and complex drug cases. He supervised a team of attorneys, tried cases personally, and handled the matters that required the most experienced representation the office had to offer.

That role gave David something that is difficult to replicate in private practice: the experience of consistently trying serious felony cases over the years against experienced Baltimore City prosecutors, in the same courtrooms and before the same judges where his clients' cases are decided today.

Assistant Federal Public Defender: Four Years in Federal Court

For more than four years, David represented defendants in federal court in Maryland as an Assistant Federal Public Defender, appearing before the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland in Baltimore.

Federal criminal defense is a distinct specialty. Federal investigations are longer and more resource-intensive than state investigations. Federal prosecutors at the U.S. Attorney's Office have access to FBI agents, DEA investigators, and sophisticated forensic resources. Federal sentencing guidelines impose structured sentence ranges that differ fundamentally from Maryland state sentencing. And federal defendants serve at least 85 percent of their sentence, with no parole.

David's years as an AFPD mean he understands how federal cases are built from the investigation stage, how federal prosecutors approach charging decisions, how the guidelines are calculated and challenged, and what effective federal defense looks like in Baltimore's federal courthouse. That experience is directly relevant to every federal criminal case he handles at Walsh-Little Law.

Walsh-Little Law

David founded Walsh-Little Law to bring the same commitment to defense that guided his public career to clients who need experienced private representation. The firm focuses entirely on criminal defense in Maryland's state courts and the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland.

Every client at Walsh-Little Law works directly with David. He handles every case personally, from the initial consultation through the resolution of the matter. There are no associates and no paralegals who take over once the case is underway.

Bar Admissions

David is admitted to practice in New York and Maryland (since 1995), as well as the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the United States Supreme Court.

Community Engagement

David and his family have lived in the City of Baltimore for the last thirty years. His three daughters are proud graduates of the Baltimore City Public School System. He and his wife, an elementary school teacher in Baltimore City, are involved in various social justice causes in the area.
